No-Nonsense Non-Profits Working to Prevent Distracted Driving

These days there are a lot of folks talking about the dangers of distracted driving.

More importantly, there are an increasing number of talented, no-nonsense, folks who are working hard to actually do something about it.

SafeKids.org mission is to prevent the accidental injury of children.  They've got a smart team of people and a savvy CEO named Mitch Stoller who is the former head of the Lance Armstrong Foundation where he created and launched the world-famous LiveStrong bracelets.  With regard to distracted driving, SafeKids released a fascinating study this past week documenting the increased likelihood of motorist distractions while driving in schools zones.  Take a look and see what the research says.  Then ask yourself how focused are you while driving your car and entering a school zone.

NOYS is another non-profit organziation doing great work to help prevent distracted driving among American youth.  Sandy Spavone is the executive director and has served as an early advocate on the importance of safe driving edcuation.  Under Sandy's leadership, NOYS partnered with NHTSA to create and launch the Under Your Influence web site -- a terrific resource for parents who might be struggling to teach kids about the responsibility of driving in a modern world.

Another non-profit group surfaced recently called txtresponsibly.org with a mission to prevent injury caused by the act of texting wrecklessly while driving.  The organization is a spin-off from a for-profit marketing agency called Pica Design based in Maine.  I have not met or spoken with the team at Pica but I love that they're not just "talking" about dangers -- they're taking concrete steps, just like SafeKids and NOYS, to edcuate and hopefully prevent distracted driving.
